Case Study: BAC’s Ice Thermal Storage Delivers Sweet Results at Penn State Berkey Creamery

Baltimore, MD (Junio 10, 2026) -

Penn State Berkey Creamery implemented BAC’s ice thermal storage solution to reduce energy costs, maintain consistent process temperatures, and improve system reliability for its batch refrigeration operations. Installed with a BAC VC1 evaporative condenser at Penn State’s main campus in 2024, the system was designed to support critical ice cream production while addressing rising utility costs and peak demand charges.

By shifting ice production to off-peak and super off-peak utility periods, the creamery was able to eliminate a compressor, reduce refrigerant equipment size, and achieve up to a 58% reduction in electric costs, about $574 in weekly savings. At the same time, BAC’s external melt technology helps maintain a consistent 34°F supply temperature, supporting repeatable batch processing and helping protect ice cream quality.
